Apetit Reduced Water Consumption and Saved Costs with AVEVA MES
Apetit's goal was to develop more sustainable food production by reducing water consumption in operations at the Säkylä production facility. The company successfully cut water usage by 25% through optimizing water supply and implementing a new consumption analytics and monitoring system. The entire project was carried out on the AVEVA MES platform within a few months.
Apetit project in a nutshell
Apetit’s food production process has significantly reduced water usage and wastewater through a comprehensive optimization project using the AVEVA platform. Annual water consumption, previously enough to fill a football field with a 23-meter water column, has been cut by six meters.
The key benefit is reduced wastewater, lowering environmental impact and treatment costs at the Säkylä plant. The project included nozzle optimization, real-time monitoring, and employee training. With automated displays, workers now track water use instantly, improving efficiency.
Completed in a few months with Roima Oy and Klinkmann, the project quickly paid for itself thanks to thorough planning across business, IT, and environmental needs.
More Efficient and Eco-Friendly Production
To grasp the scale of savings, consider that the annual water usage of the production process is now around 150,000 cubic meters. This volume equals filling a football field with a water column 23 meters high. Thanks to the optimizations, that imaginary water column has been reduced by six meters.
The true benefit, however, comes from reducing the amount of wastewater. Wastewater is not just an environmental challenge but also a financial burden. All used water is treated at the Säkylä plant’s own wastewater treatment facility, which is costly.
“All used water becomes wastewater, and treating it is expensive,” explains Jorma Itäluoma, Production Manager for Apetit’s food business.
Intelligent Monitoring and Operational Analytics Ensure Continued Efficiency
The implementation of the savings project using the AVEVA platform was comprehensive and effective:
- All water nozzles were mapped and optimized.
- A new water consumption monitoring system was introduced.
- Employees were trained to use the new system and to align with the savings objectives.
“The goals were achieved, and the project paid for itself quickly. The success was rooted in a thorough preliminary study that considered environmental, IT, and business perspectives, as well as involving the right experts,” says Jari Varjo, Apetit’s Chief Information Officer.
Real-Time Monitoring and Analytics Improve Results
Thanks to the new management system, water consumption monitoring is no longer solely the responsibility of supervisors. With automation, production workers can now see real-time consumption figures on display boards. This enables faster responses and more efficient water use.
The project was implemented quickly and cost-effectively. Apetit partnered with a certified project supplier from Klinkmann (Roima Oy), which added complementary features to the existing production control system. The project involved three experts from each company and was completed within a few months.
“Apetit’s careful preparation ensured the project’s success. We had a clear target, and everything was planned from the perspectives of business, the environment, and IT. This was an investment that paid off immediately,” summarizes Jari Varjo.
