Veolia STEP: Driving Industrial Energy Efficiency with AVEVA Unified Operations for more than 10 years

STEP Oy company monitors and optimizes energy production from several sites from AVEVA UOC central control rooms located in Harjavalta and Koskenkorva. AVEVA Historian manages the data for analytics and for any AI guided operations.
Veolia STEP

STEP operates AVEVA Unified Operations Center (UOC) control rooms in Harjavalta and Koskenkorva, overseeing multiple unmanned local control rooms at customer sites such as Altia, Hankkija, and Findest Protein. The AVEVA solution is implemented by Klinkmann´s AVEVA SI partner company, Insta Automation, and supported by Klinkmann. The central control room system has been used for over a decade, with continuous updates to meet the newest requirements for modern data-driven production.

Even during network interruptions, local systems maintain operational continuity, while restored connections resume data flow seamlessly. Remote troubleshooting is often handled via mobile notifications, minimizing downtime and costs.

At the heart of this solution is AVEVA System Platform, supported by AVEVA Historian, which collects and manages time-series and transactional production data. This robust data foundation enables advanced analytics and AI-driven optimization, ensuring smarter, more sustainable operations.

Suomen Teollisuuden Energiapalvelut – STEP Oy (Veolia) provides sustainable energy solutions to industrial customers based on partnership principles. Customer needs, energy efficiency, and tailored solutions are central to all offered energy services. STEP is a joint venture between Veolia (51%) and Pori Energia (49%), operating in the production of energy and related services under long-term contracts for industrial clients across Finland.

Integrated Digital Platform for Scalability and Reliability

The AVEVA solution unifies diverse automation systems into a single interface for efficient data collection, reporting, and scalability. The platform has evolved through continuous updates under AVEVA Customer First service, protecting the original investment while adding new capabilities such as enhanced analytics, expanded plant connections, and improved fault handling.

Each plant features a local control room for backup operations, ensuring resilience. When connectivity is restored, data flows back to the central UOC, maintaining full visibility and control. The AVEVA System Platform’s flexibility allows easy integration of new sites and devices from multiple manufacturers, making it a future-proof solution for industrial energy management.
